Tara Lunarsong is the player character of Baldur's Gate 3. She's abducted by the Nautiloid at the start of the game.
    Background
Tara was born in the forest outside of Baldur's Gate to a human father, Conrad and elven mother, Sarya. When she was a teenager, her parents were murdered by a noble but she was spared, although that wasn't much better.
The nobleman brought her to well known slaver Enver Gortash, who purchased her as a gift to his friend, Aevan Corvaldi.
At first, he treats her as an apprentice that he can mold into a perfect weapon. As she grows older, their bond grows more romantic from his side. He begins to decide what she wears, how she dresses her hair ...
One day, she has enough and fights back. However, Aevan overpowers her and thinking he killed her, he enlists Enver Gortash' help to get rid of her body. They throw her body into the river Chionthar. Days later, she washes up on shore and is found by a fisherman. While he goes to alert the guards, Tara flees, but she doesn't get far. A nautiloid ship crashes into the city and kidnaps Tara.

    Baldur's Gate 3

Tara wakes up on the nautiloid ship, having just been infected by a tadpole. She escapes her pod and wanders the ship, running into an Intellect Devourer named Us, trapped inside the body of an elf. She recruits the Intellect Devourer and continues traveling, until she meets Lae'zel of Crèche K'liir. At first, Lae'Zel, thinking Tara is a Thrall, threatens her until she realizes they're both infected. They fight through a horde of imps together and meet Shadowheart. Shadowheart is apprehensive of Lae'zel, claiming Gith have a problem with everyone. Tara tries to make the two get along before they continue to the helm of the ship, where Mindflayers are battling with Cambions
The Mindflayer commands them to reach the Transponder at the front of the ship. Tara runs through a horde of imps and Lesser Hellsboars to reach the Transponder, when the ship is attacked by a Red Dragon. The ship travels just in time to escape the dragon. It ends up in the Wilderness

    Act 1

Waking up on a ravaged beach, Tara reunites with Shadowheart, who tells her Lae'zel ran off. They are right next to the crash site of the nautiloid ship and begin their adventure.
Tara meets a fellow victim named Astarion. He tricks her into cornering a tadpole, which in reality is a boar. He tackles Tara to the ground, thinking her a thrall, but he is stopped by her companions. Upon realizing he's in the same boat as them, he gives them a backhanded apology.
They also meet a man stuck in an Ancient Sigil Circle who introduces himself as Gale Dekarios. It seems he has the same problem as them and they decide to team up. Nearby, they find Lae'zel, hold hostage by two Tieflings. Using the tadpole, she commands Tara to free her so Tara lures the Tieflings away from her, finding out about a safe settlement a bit further away. Most notably, one of the Tieflings knows about Githyanki.
They travel to this settlement, the Emerald Grove, a settlement of Druids where they shelter Tiefling refugees from Elturel after it was briefly plunged into Avernus.
The Emerald Grove is under attack by Goblins. Together with the help of Tieflings, an adventuring group led by Aradin, and a warlock named Wyll, they defeat the goblins together. Notably, one moment, Tara is casting magic all around when a Goblin shoves her, right into Wyll's arms, who saves her. The two fight in sync until the Goblins are defeated.
Once the fight is over, Tara, Gale and Shadowheart are allowed entrance into the Grove. While Tara doesn't mind staying to find a healer and Gale wants to stay to help the Tieflings, Shadowheart wishes to leave in case more Goblins come. Right at the entrance, Aradin fights with the leader of the Tiefling refugees, Zevlor. Tara tries to mediate between the two, until Aradin calls Zevlor a racial slur. She allows Zevlor to knock him out.
Deeper into the Grove, they find a trader who tells them about a healer, Nettie. They also find a group of tiefling siblings, one of which wants to leave, while the other two want to stay and help. Tara convinces Rolan to stay, much to Cal and Lia's delight.
In The Hollow, they reunite with Wyll, who is training tiefling children. This warms Tara's heart and she invites him to join her and the others. He tells her he is hunting a devil and would accept her help, thus they team up.
They head deeper into the Hollow where they meet more of the tieflings, including a pickpocketing child trying to steal from one of Aradin's adventurers. Tara ends up defending the child when the adventurer raises his hand against them.
She also ends up saving Sazza from Arka and helps a tiefling paralyzed by a potion. Besides this, she also saves a tiefling from a Bugbear assassin.
Going down to the Sacred Pool, they are stopped by druids talking to a tiefling pair of parents. Apparently, their daughter Arabella tried to steal their sacred idol and is being held in custody by Kagha, the leader of the druids. Tara promises to Arabella's parents, Locke and Komira that she will save their daughter. She fulfills her promise by convincing Kagha to let the child go and returns her safely to her parents. The group returns to Kagha, since she wanted to talk to them and, while Tara keeps her distracted, the others snoop for more information. One of them finds a note hidden in Kagha's chest, asking for a secret meeting in the swamps.
When they reunite, they finally go to meet Nettie, who tells them their only hope is Halsin, who has been captured by the goblins. They decide they should deal with the goblins soon and free Halsin.
They also meet Volo, who wishes to interview her, although he has a skewed idea of what happened. He's not the only bard they meet, as up on a hill they find Alfira, who is struggling to finish her song in honor of her mentor. Tara helps her out but the singing doesn't stop once Alfira finishes. Tracking the singing, the group ends up at the beach, where a young tiefling boy, Mirkon is enchanted by singing Harpies. To save the boy, the tadpole'd group has to defeat the harpies. He thanks them and gives them the secret password to a hidden passageway.
The hidden passageway leads to a secret alcove, where they find a bunch of tiefling children led by a girl named Mol. She asks Tara to steal the idol Arabella tried to steal, after seeing everything Tara has done for the children. Tara agrees to do it. A plan begins to form. First, they want stop the ritual the druids are working on to close the Grove by finding dirt on Kagha. Once the ritual is stopped, Tara will take the idol.
Before going to the swamps, the group sets up camp. When they leave, they pass by a hidden door where a druid is held hostage by goblins. The group defeats the goblins and saves the druid, who thanks them, before they go to camp. As night falls, Gale lets Tara in on a secret. He has a certain sickness that requires him to consume magic artifacts or he will die. Tara tells him he should've told him sooner, but that she will help him.
The next day, the group goes to the swamps, only to find a nice marsh. On the way, they run into Auntie Ethel, who they met earlier at the Grove, being accosted by Demir and Johl who claim she knows where their sister, Mayrina is. While Auntie Ethel claims she has no clue, Tara sees through her lie and calls her out on it. Annoyed, Auntie Ethel teleports away. Demir and Johl fill Tara and her friends in on what happened with Mayrina. Tara wishes them good luck but Wyll suggests helping them, which the brothers don't like. They decide to look for their sister on their own.
After inspecting magic at play, they realize this was the swamp mentioned in the note to Kagha. Near the tree mentioned in the note are a bunch of Wood Woads and Mud Mephits, but they do end up finding the truth: Kagha is working for Shadow Druids.
Before they can return to the Grove, they find a teahouse but more importantly, they find Demir and Johl's corpses. They approach the teahouse and find a Gur monster hunter next to it. Gandrel claims to be looking for a vampire spawn, but since Tara hasn't seen any, they move on to the teahouse.
The teahouse belongs to Auntie Ethel, who is in fact holding Mayrina hostage. Much to Auntie Ethel's dismay, Tara tells Mayrina what happened to her brothers. Distraught, Mayrina cuts their deal and Auntie Ethel teleports her away before revealing her true form as a green Hag. A fight ensues and once Auntie Ethel is defeated, the group heads down the cellar where they find more of Auntie Ethel's victims. They also find Mayrina, locked in a cage. Once freed, she reveals Auntie Ethel was going to resurrect her deceased husband and in return, she'd give the hag her child. Just as she comes to terms with never getting her husband back, Tara finds Bitter Divorce, which resurrects Mayrina's husband, albeit as an undead. Mayrina accepts this and takes her undead husband with her.
The group returns to the Grove, where they reveal Kagha's scheme. Nearby rats transform into Shadow Druids, and a fight breaks out. Tara convinces Kagha to fight against the Shadow Druids. The rite of thorns is stopped just in time. Using the distraction, Tara steals the Idol of Silvanus and brings it to Mol.
As they head back to their campsite for the night, they come across a boar, which has been drained of blood. Two puncture marks indicate there is a vampire around. Astarion promises to keep watch in case the vampire comes to camp. However, late in the night, Tara awakes with Astarion advancing on her, fangs bared. Reluctantly, she lets him drink from her neck.
The next morning, she approaches him about it and he admits to everyone he's a vampire. After promising not to bite anyone without consent, he's allowed to live.
As they head to the goblin camp, they come across a crypt. Inside, they find an undead by the name of Withers, who decides to go to their campsite to aid them. As they near an abandoned village, they run into three people, one of which has collapsed. Tara senses the tadpole in his skull, as he does with her. He tells his friends she is a True Soul like him. His friends explain he was attacked by an Owlbear and ask Tara what they should do. Tara advises them to return to safety and to leave the owlbear behind.
The now-corpse's tadpole seemingly calls out to Tara, but she resists its call. Instead, the group follows the path they found the three adventurers on and find a large cave, inside of which is a shrine to the goddess Selûne which Shadowheart doesn't seem to like. After being pushed about her issues, Shadowheart reveals she follows the goddess Shar, which surprises the group. Still, Tara allows her to stay with them.
Also in the cave is the owlbear and her cub. The group persuades her to let them leave unscathed. They flee the cave and hear a whining dog. The dog is sitting by a corpse and, when asked what he's doing, Scratch reveals his owner isn't dead, but upon closer inspection, his owner really is deceased. Tara gives Scratch something to track her with, in case his owner doesn't wake up.
The group returns to the main road, which leads to the blighted village once called Moonhaven, where an ambush is waiting for them.
A small group of goblins is waiting for them, but are convinced to let them go, so they can take the time to explore the small village. On one side is an apothecary with a cellar. Here, they find a hidden cave filled with caskets. One of them contains the Scroll of Summon Quasit, which summons a quasit named Shovel. Shovel reveals the answers to a door nearby, which leads to a laboratory. Here, Tara finds the Necromancy of Thay. While Astarion and Gale bicker over who gets to read it, Tara decides to take it for herself.
Also in the village is a windmill, where an unfortunate Deep Gnome is tied to the wheel. A group of goblins watches and laughs until they're chased away by Tara, who frees the gnome. Much to his surprise, Tara doesn't want a reward. He explains how he's looking for his friend
