Evelyn McDaniel, also known as the Junior Deputy, or the Judge, is the player character of Far Cry 5, and a supporting character and Gun for hire in Far Cry: New Dawn. She, along with Joey Hudson, Staci Pratt, Earl Whitehorse and Cameron Burke, was supposed to arrest Joseph Seed, but things went wrong and she is forced to free her friends and kill Joseph's siblings first.
    Background
Evelyn was born in Fall's End, Hope County, on February 21st, 1990, to Stephen and Mary McDaniel, and an older brother, Jamie McDaniel. She had a decent life, raised by a deputy and nurse. However, she was quite a troublemaker as well. Always ready to start a fight to defend her friends, often getting herself hurt while playing rough with her friends.
All in all, she got decent grades throughout school, even ending up on the baseball team of Hope County High School. She wasn't particulary popular, but she was well liked and known to hang around with her friends, including Jesse Matthews, Nick Rye and Joey Hudson.
When she turned fourteen she and Jesse's sister, Nathalie, went hiking in the Whitetail Mountains, choosing one of the safer hikes, but got lost. That was when Evelyn kissed her, which Nathalie did not reciprocate. Dutch found them soon after, bringing them home. Stephen noticed something was off about his daughter so she came out to him as a lesbian. It became their little secret for a long time. A year passed and, in the meantime, she fell in love with her friend, Joey Hudson. She also came out to her family, a week before her brother left for Oxford, England.
Her mother, a devout Christian, took some time to get used to the idea.
After a week or two, Joseph Seed arrives in Hope County. After two years, when Mary finally seemed to accept her daughter, she also seemingly disappeared, leaving no trace except for the "Sinner" marked on their house's white walls.
For a long time, Evelyn blames herself but she and her father manage on their own. A year later, Evelyn graduates and thinks about her future when she realizes. She wants to be a pilot. With the help of Nick Rye's father, she studies for her flying license. By the time she turns twenty, she leaves Hope County for Helena, where she gets a job as private pilot.
She regulary returns to Hope County to visit her father, which is also how she reunites with Joey Hudson. They go on a few dates whenever she's back in Hope County, and they eventually start dating, unbeknownst to everyone. They don't feel the need to tell everyone anyway, but Evelyn is definitely planning on getting a job back in Hope County, just to be closer to Joey.
However, things go wrong when she comes home to her father, having hanged himself. But she knows there's no way he did it to himself. She stays home until the funeral, together with her brother. She was planning on staying there, to finish her father's business, but that was postponed as well when Earl Whitehorse took her home to find her old childhood house on fire.
That was when she decided to join Hope County's Sheriff Department, going back to Helena for Montana's Law Enforcement Academy. After a year of studying and training, she finally returned to Hope County, this time as a Junior Deputy. She moved in with Joey, since every other house had been bought by Eden's Gate.
She tries to get help from outside the County, but no matter how hard the Sheriff's Department, tries, it takes a year for them to send help - and even then, it's only one man by the name of Cameron Burke.
    Involvement

    Far Cry 5

Even as Junior Deputy, she is one of the few people Sheriff Whitehorse trusted. Even then, however, the arrest goes wrong when Joseph's followers refuse to let him go. Their helicopter crashes, and she and Burke are forced to flee while Pratt, Hudson and Whitehorse are taken by the cult.
She and Burke try to escape the County, but Eden's Gate isn't eager to let her go, pulling out all the stops to prevent them from leaving, going so far to blow up a bridge to stop them. Their car crashes into the water, but they both manage to escape. Evelyn ends up being luckier than Burke, who is taken by Peggies. Instead, Evelyn is helped by Dutch Roosevelt.
It takes her a day and a half to recover, and Dutch isn't exactly pleased by what happened, but he helps her nonetheless. Their first step is getting the Resistance started. For that, they need to liberate the island he resides on - currently controlled by Peggies.
When Evelyn finally fixes the radio tower, they can get really started. That's when a TV broadcast comes from John Seed, Joseph's youngest brother, and he makes it known that he holds Joey Hudson captive.
Dutch recommends helping Fall's End first, a town that is also a big part of the community, so that's what she does first.
On her way to Fall's End, she finds Boomer, caged by Peggies. His owners are dead, so when Evelyn saves him, he follows her to Fall's End.
The town is currently in control of the Peggies, who have kidnapped Mary May, Pastor Jerome, and some of its citizens. After freeing them, getting rid of the Peggies is easy. Mary May and Pastor Jerome thank her for her help, but they can't just infiltrate John's bunker.
They promise that, in turn for Evelyn's help, the Resistance will always be ready to help her with fighting the cult. They also tell her about Nick Rye, who's been having trouble himself and when Evelyn shows up to help, she sees his plane fly away, but Nick's definitely not flying it.
She offers to bring it back for him, fuelled by adrenaline as she runs through trees and across the runway at John Seed's ranch. Peggies try and stop her but ultimately fail when she opens the hangar and flies out, saving Nick's plane.
Nick is glad, of course, but the Peggies definitely aren't. They ambush the hangar, but Evelyn and Nick fight them off with ease. When they're finished, Nick plans to leave but is stopped by Kim, who convinces him to stay.
Evelyn's next stop is the Lamb of God church, where she finds Grace Armstrong defending the church from Peggies who are trying to destroy graves of the Veterans, including Grace's father's grave.
When the Peggies fail to take over the church, John is pissed. Not only did Evelyn manage to enter his ranch, she also prevented his men from carrying out their jobs. Therefore, he sent his men out to hunt her specifically.

    The Cleansing

When the Peggies see her, their instructions are close: hit her with a bliss bullet, which'd be enough to knock her out. They take her to a small lake, not too far from Fall's End, where other innocent people are waiting.
When Evelyn came to, she was being drowned by a Peggie, her vision blurred by both water and bliss. While the other people are led to a van, John doesn't think she's atoned enough yet and baptises her again. He's about to dunk her under again when Joseph interrupts, scolding John for letting his anger get the better of him. After this, she is also brought to the van with two other people and a Peggie.
The van drives for a while, before being ambushed by the Resistance. Pastor Jerome helps Evelyn leave the van, glad she's safe, but they're not out of the woods just yet. More Resistance members and other innocent folk are holed up ahead, past a security gate. There's a small group across a small gorge, connected by a makeshift river and zipline.
The Peggies there have a mortar, making the way across hard to pass, but Evelyn manages by hiding wherever she can. Once there, she kills the Peggies and saves the last remaining Resistance member, Merle Briggs, since the others had been murdered. They're forced to fight off a Peggie ambush while the Resistance sends a helicopter to help them out.
Once safe, Evelyn makes sure to further ruin John's life. Including blowing up silos and taking over outposts. The final straw for John, however, was taking Mary May's father's truck back.

    The Confession

Evelyn is abducted again, but this time not to be baptized. Instead, she is taken to John's bunker, where she wakes up tied to an office chair, with Joey across from her in the same predicament - except her mouth is taped shut. John appears and asks which one of them wants to confess first. Evelyn is the first to reply, not just because Joey can't, but also because she doesn't want her girlfriend to suffer more.
While John takes Joey away, stating that the atonement has to be private, Evelyn takes the chance to escape. Her only way to escape is risky: throwing herself down the stairs to hope that the speed and momentum will break the ropes tying her to the chair.
Surprisingly, her plan works. After arming herself, she tries to find her way through the bunker. The door John left through is airlocked, so she is forced to climb through pipes to find a way out. After fighting a bunch of Peggies and getting her weapons back, she finds John again, with Joey.
After taunting her, he lets bliss flow through the airconditioning, forcing her to flee without Joey. Evelyn fights angels and Peggies, all whilst John shouts taunts at her, but he lets her flee.
Once past the unmanned security gate, she calls Dutch to let him know what happened, then begs to send someone to pick her up. Not long after, Nick Rye shows up and lets her stay at his place, with Kim. At first she denies, but Nick and Kim are very persuasive.
The next day, she's planning how to piss John off even more, and she already knows the easiest way to do so. His ranch and his giant 'YES'-bilboard. She borrows Nick's plane, Carmina for the bilboard and manages to take over the ranch with ease, but not even that is enough to lure John out. She keeps destroying his convoys, silos, taking over outposts, even preventing Peggies from working until finally, he contacts her again. However, instead of sending men after her, he invites her to Fall's End.

    The Atonement

Fall's End is completely abandoned by the time she gets there. Every door and window is boarded up - the Spread Eagle, the genera store across the road, even the houses - all locked up. Except for the Fall's End church, where John told her to meet him. However, once she enters, a Peggie is ready to knock her out with the butt of his gun.
When she wakes up, John is on top of her with a tattoo gun. Evelyn is forced to watch as he tattooes the word 'Wrath' on her chest. When he is finally done, she is led to the altar, where Mary May, Nick and Pastor Jerome are waiting. They're forced to atone, and at first Nick fights back, until John says something that seems to change his mind. When he relents, his sin is carved out - literally.
Evelyn is up next, and even Pastor Jerome is adamant she says yes. She then remembers how he held his bible when he saved her at the security gate, and reluctantly says yes, flipping open the book and pulling out Pastor Jerome's gun. She almost manages the shoot John, if it weren't for the Peggie pushing her arm at the last second.
While John flees, a fight breaks out and Evelyn and Mary May follow John to his ranch, where he takes off with the Affirmation. Evelyn is quick to follow in a plane of her own when Nick contacts her to say he'll help her.

    Wrath

John and one of his Chosen are determined to kill them, but Evelyn and Nick are faster, shooting his plane and even killing his Chosen. John is forced to jump out of his burning plane and parachute down. He plans to flee to his bunker to make a final stand, but Evelyn makes sure he doesn't get there, fighting him outside of Fall's End. The fight is brutal but Evelyn comes out on top nonetheless. Before even thinking of letting the Resistance know John is dead, she continues to go to the bunker to save Joey.

    The Qualities of Mercy

The bunker is guarded by Peggies, but with Nick's help, Evelyn gets rid of them quickly. Using John's key, she opens the bunker and begins her descent into the missile silo to look for her girlfriend.
Peggies are on guard and alarms are blaring, but Evelyn fights through them, determined, until she finally finds the control room with a staircase leading down. Descending the stairs, she finds a bunch of dead bodies, until finally running into a pair of Peggies, set up on two chairs.
Not long after, she is attacked by Joey herself, who doesn't seem to realize it's Evelyn. When she does notice, she stops. The two then go to the control room to free the rest of the prisoners, but security system prevents them from unlocking all the prisons. So, while Joey saves the others, Evelyn goes ahead to free the prisoners while Peggies continue their assault. She fights back, however, and is about to flee with the rest of the prisoners when Joey begs for her help.
There is another cell connected to another control room, forcing Evelyn to climb down the missile silo to the control room, where she blows up the consoles causing a meltdown in the bunker's systems.
Then, climbing up, Joey informs Evelyn of a bliss supply she could blow up, which she does. However, the bliss mixed with other explosions make it clear the silo is about to blow up and she needs to make it out of there while Joey escapes with the rest of the prisoners.
Evelyn contacts Pastor Jerome, begging for help and he tells to find a way to open the silo so they can pick her up with a helicopter. The silo takes a while to open, while Evelyn has to fight fire and Peggies, before she is able to flee with the helicopter.
Not long after, she's at the Spread Eagle, prepared to celebrate their victory. Everyone wants to thank Evelyn but she would rather spend some time with her girlfriend. After a few drinks, she is called by Sheriff Whitehorse, who is over at the Hope County Jail.
He heard of John's death and asks Evelyn for help at the jail, to which she promises to head over there tomorrow. After that, she and Joey head home and make love.
The following morning, she makes her way to the Henbane River while Joey stays in Fall's End to help the Resistance. When she arrives at the Hope County Jail, it is under attack, by Peggies. After taking care of them, Evelyn is allowed to enter the Jail. The Peggies keep attacking, and Sheriff Whitehorse asks for her help. She helps the Resistance fight against the cult until they're forced to retreat.
Sheriff Whitehorse then introduces her to the other main leaders at the Jail: Virgil Minkler, the mayor of Hope County, and Tracey Lader, someone Evelyn used to go to school with. While Virgil and Tracey leave, Earl stays behind to catch up with Evelyn, talking about the arrest and whatever's happened since.
He explains how he hasn't heard from Staci yet, nor from Jacob, but he is proud of Evelyn for saving Joey. She asks him for what she can do to help the Henbane, and he tells her about the vet that's gone missing, asking if she could see if he's alright. Faith, however, won't accept that Evelyn is causing trouble in her region.

    Leap of Faith

Faith appears to Evelyn like the siren she is, in the shape of Joey Hudson. However, Evelyn quickly realizes it's not really Joey and Faith commends her for realising, introducing her to the Bliss.
Evelyn is brought to the statue of Joseph where she finds Burke, lured by Faith to jump off the statue. Evelyn is guided towards the edge as well, and is tricked into jumping off.
She wakes up at the bottom of the statue, surrounded by the bodies of dead men who jumped off, too, but not Burke. Evelyn heads back to the jail and tells Sheriff Whitehorse what happened.
After talking to everyone, Evelyn hops into a plane back in Holland Valley and destroys the Statue of Joseph at Tracy's request, even going further and burning the original copy of his book.
